Please could you explain more about this and any tips to help him Word finding difficulties are those tip of the tongue experiences when you know the word in your head but you cant remember it to say it out loud. The student has good comprehension of the word but cant express it. He is likely to have difficulty responding to questions that require a specific answer relating to names locations dates or specific facts from a story for example What is the item called or What is the name of the main character He is also likely to have difficulty relating information during a conversation when retelling an event or a story. These students have a high incidence of word finding behaviours such as word repetitions word revisions trying to say the word or parts of the word in different ways substitutions of other words empty words such as oh well and time fillers ums and ers. Strategies to help students include Reassure the student that you know that he knows the word but is struggling to find it. Give the student thinking time to find the word. Encourage the student to describe the word target word Microscope we use it in Science we look at tiny things we cant usually see it makes things bigger it starts with m. Encourage the student to use gestures to demonstrate the word something like charades. Draw it. T urvey Lower School dedicated its recent Creative Arts Day to exploring the schools values and the unique strengths of each pupil underlining the importance the school places on creativity as a gateway to self- awareness and self-esteem. To inspire the children to get creative Turvey Lower invited talented local artists Leigh Hopkinson and Anne-Marie Stijelja to run workshops. They loved lino block printing led by Leigh where they designed their own template and chose colours to create a lino print. Stijelja joined forces with business confidence coach Suzy Bashford to encourage the children to unleash their inner superheroes they did this by choosing a power stone and decorating a box for it covered in the words describing their individual superpower strengths such as curious or energetic or caring. In another session to help remind them of the schools values such as respect sharing and forgiveness children used decoupage to create a large values tree. In the Kitchen Music workshop children embraced creativity as not only a route to self-discovery but also as pure fun they used everyday objects to make music finding it particularly amusing to use their body to create percussion effects. Assistant Head of Turvey Lower Sheryl Lewis said As a school we feel passionate about celebrating the different talents and qualities of every child and creative arts are an important way for children to learn express their originality and build their confidence.
